But Father Cataldo was more than a good administrator accomplishing a multitude of tasks. He was a leader. Young men were naturally drawn to him because he both reflected and inspired them toward a high calling. Yet he could judge which aspirants, like Mr. Conolly, were not suitable for it. With those under him, like Father Eberschweiler trying to found a new mission, he could frame his advice with genuine pastoral care.
