Even while Superior of the Rocky Mountain Mission (1877-1893), Father Cataldo remained devoted to the Spokane Indians of St. Michael's Mission despite his many administrative duties. When finally relieved of that responsibility, he could have had any post he desired, and chose to spend the next three years with the Crow Indians of SE Montana, learning their language and being their priest, counselor, advocate ... entirely theirs. Father Cataldo continued that same pattern to the end of his days, whether with the Umatilla of Oregon, the Yup'ik and Ten'a of Alaska, or with the people he knew best, the Nez Perce' of Idaho.
